The History of Acne Treatment

The treatment of acne, as with so many other medical disorders, has advanced greatly over the last few decades. Years ago, acne treatment depended upon “physical modalities,” such as scrubbing with harsh soaps, ultraviolet light, low-dose X-ray sessions, and dietary changes. Prescription medicines, both topical and internal, revolutionized acne therapy with great success, culminating with Accutane in the 80’s, which is still by far the most effective medical agent for moderate to severe or stubborn acne. But the last few years have seen a rise in physical treatments, such as Laser Genesis, microdermabrasion, Diamond Glow, and dietary supplements, as alternatives to manage this unsightly, disfiguring condition.

A Variety of Treatments

The depth of the acne process within the pores determines which acne treatments are best suited for you. If blackheads and whiteheads are predominant, time-tested topical prescription medications, such as Vitamin A derivatives, are employed. Physical modalities, such as microdermabrasion and dermalinfusion such as Diamond Glow, which abrade the outer layers of skin to unroof clogged pores and stimulate removal of whiteheads and blackheads speed the resolution. Additionally, Diamond Glow infuses acne-specific serum into the skin. Laser Genesis treatments target the redness and pigmentation which often persist after flares of acne. And of late, dietary phytochemicals derived from certain vegetables have shown promise and efficacy by tweaking estrogen metabolism.

If the acne process is deeper within the skin, systemic treatments are used, from acne-specific antibiotics and hormone modulators to the often miraculous Accutane, which has for decades safely and totally resolved even the most serious of cases.
