What is a Chemical Peel?
The term “chemical peel” can be a bit jarring to someone who’s never heard of the phrase before, or for someone delving deeper into the world of skin treatments. But rest assured, the term simply refers to a type of acid being swept across the skin, meaning to eat away at dead skin cells accumulated on the surface. There are two types of acids commonly used within chemical peels, that being AHA’s and BHA’s. An AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) is a water-soluble acid, meaning this acid resides on the skin’s surface, exfoliating the build-up of dead skin and debris there. BHA’s (beta hydroxy acids) are an oil- soluble acid, meaning that they are attracted to the oil in our skin and are the key to exfoliating our pores. While there are chemical peels that offer AHA (glycolic, lactic, mandelic) and BHA (salicylic) options, modern science has formulated peels that offer a blended solution and are perfect for most skin types and concerns. Blended peels are highly popular amongst the chemical peel community due to their ability to address concerns upon the epidermis as well as within the pores, effectively and thoroughly clearing out the skin. Here at QnA, we offer AHA, BHA, and blended peel options that are suited to all skin types. Come in for a consultation with one of our doctors to determine which peel would be best for you!
